How do you jump start social media success for small businesses?

Social media is all the rage – especially when the landscape of marketing has dramatically changed from outbound to inbound marketing. Studies show that inbound marketing (or digital marketing) is taking the marketing and advertising world by storm because of the new strategies that businesses need to rethink and reconsider in order to effectively draw in prospects to their doors. Take for example 73% of Fortune 500 Companies who have Twitter accounts and 66% of the said companies that have Facebook pages, they all know the value of Facebook fans and Twitter readers. But for small business getting into social media it may be a little tricky at first because signing up for Facebook and maintaining a Twitter account is not where social media ends. It is a complex process of strategies that require time, effort, quality content, and relationship building. However, jump starting your social media success by these simple steps will catapult you into reaping rewards from your online marketing efforts. Work smarter, not harder: advice?

Wouldn’t life be grand if we could help everyone all the time? I wish it were that simple! Sometimes, I get asked a question that I would love to be able to solve, and I don’t know the best answer to give. It’s either something I haven’t experienced myself, something I had never thought about before, or something I just don’t feel like I have the ability to analyze all angles fairly.

So today, dear Split Aces reader, I’m asking YOU to help me give advice to this ambitious woman on a mission to create a life of freedom in business doing what she loves online. After reading the article, “When What You’re Doing Isn’t Working,” I received an email from a woman asking for advice. I asked her if it would be okay for me to anonymously publish her email on the blog to see if others could help her out, and she welcomed the idea.

Help a girl out, and please share your thoughts!

She would definitely appreciate anything you’ve got to offer, and to be honest, so would I. I would love to know what others think about this, as I’m sure that there are so many people out there struggling with the mentality that there are too few hours in the day and too little money in the bank. Take the long way – short cuts are for wimps

Short cuts.

We all love ‘em. They save you hours of time, they save you endless amounts of energy, and they save you tons and tons of money. Except that I just lied to you, and this is not true at all.

Short cuts are going to be the death of your success, and yes, I am telling you that taking the long way can get you there faster. [Tweet this]

My favorite TV show of all time is FRIENDS. One of the best episodes in this series was when Joey decided that he was going to build a small table for him and Chandler to throw their mail on when they walked in the door. Once he started building the small table, he decided to go ahead and build an entire entertainment system out of wood. Chandler walks into the apartment, sees the mess that Joey is creating, and Joey tells him to calm down and that it will be all finished in no time at all.

Once the entertainment system is built and ready to rock, Joey and Chandler ask the rest of their friends to help them lift it up and stand it against the wall between the two bedrooms. They stand the new entertainment system up against the wall, and… this happens: click the photo below to watch on YouTube. Continue reading “Take the long way – short cuts are for wimps”

Don’t be the Texan who knows nothing about football

I have a confession.

What I am about to tell you will put my entire upbringing, as a Texan, to shame. Seriously – by publicly announcing what I’m about to tell you, I may be forced to leave this great state.

I… (gulp)… know nothing about football.

I know.

What kind of Texan knows nothing about football? Think about Varsity Blues, Friday Night Lights and every other football show/movie that takes place here. Texans know and love their football, and I never hopped on that bandwagon until recently. Continue reading “Don’t be the Texan who knows nothing about football”

Facebook: Oreo rocks at it

Whenever I take on a new client that needs help with promoting their brand through social media, particularly when it comes to Facebook, I almost always point them in the direction of the Oreo fan page to kick things off. I love what Oreo does on their Facebook page… they’ve got social media nailed, and businesses – small and large – can learn a thing or 12 from their example.

That being said, there are certainly ways for you to not reinvent the wheel by doing things flat out incorrectly from the beginning.

It’s also important to remember that you don’t need a giant budget to create social media magic for your brand. [Tweet this]

While Oreo has 27 million fans already, and surely has deep pockets to hire the best of the best marketers, you can do these things with little to no budget on your own, and it can still be fantastic. The importance of community in business, and how to find yours

It’s human nature to feel the desire to belong to something bigger – something that makes us feel important, useful, and purposeful. As we grow up, that desire never disappears, but it changes and moves in between phases.

When we are kids, we dream to be picked first in gym class. For some reason, we all dread the thought of being picked last in an intense game of Dodgeball (how humiliating, right)?

When we’re teenagers, we desperately hope to be invited to the cool kids’ house parties when their parents go out of town (yes, I’m looking at you – don’t act innocent).

When we’re in college, we hope to be accepted as part of Greek life or any type of academic, charitable, or young professional organizations.

When we begin our careers, all bright-eyed and filled with ambition, we hope to become part of professional communities that will help carry us to the top of the ladders and help shape us into the professionals we always knew we would become.

We are always longing to belong to something, which we know and endlessly hope will lead us toward bettering ourselves and being accepted by our peers, mentors, friends, and family.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur on your way to becoming the next feature story in Forbes Magazine, or if you’re an intern starting from the bottom of the totem pole at a big fancy-pants corporate empire, the importance of community in business is still everywhere. Rich people, poor people, young people, old people, introverts, extroverts, and everyone in between…we all desire to be part of a community.
